And so it begins
I’ve always enjoyed writing. In fact I always tested better in reading than math, funny that I would choose such a quantitative field of work. What spurred me into writing now you ask. Life. The universe chose for me. I’m merely reacting.
On October 1st I returned to work from two months of parental leave. The plan was for me to return to work for a month and then take parental leave again through the rest of the year. My wife remained on leave in October and would return to work in November. This would allow us six months of parental coverage.
It was a great plan… but you know what they say about plans. “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry” - Robert Burns. On October 1st after returning from parental leave I was informed that my team was laid of. My team consisted of about 20 people, some of whom had been with the firm for multiple decades.
I was stunned, but I didn’t panic because I don’t usually panic. I like to be prepared, so my resume was essentially ready to send out. Within the hour I had applied to a few roles. I also began to scheme. Among the things I thought would be helpful was to put my thoughts out into the world.
About me
I haven’t written much recently and like any muscle my writing muscle has atrophied.
My executive summary or elevator pitch is that I’ve spent the last decade in the analytic space. My experience ranges from analyst to data science manager. I’m fortunate that my career started as “data science” was becoming popular. I remember when there were only a few analytic master’s programs. Now, it seems every school has a DS MS program… bubble anyone? Anyway, I was lucky to have ridden the wave.
On a personal note, I am a husband, a father, a sibling, and a friend. My family enjoys traveling. I recently started boxing. I also enjoy creating and contributing to open source projects. I like to joke that my hobby is my profession. In that regard, I am most fortunate.
El fin
Well, that’s it. We’ve been introduced.
